cd japan vs. yesasia:
There's a popular misconception that ordering from CD Japan is more expensive than ordering
from YesAsia. My goal is not to prove people wrong, but to show them that they are mistaken.
It is true that it would probably be cheaper to order only one or two items at a time from
YesAsia, but if you make larger orders, you start to save more and more by sticking with CD
Japan. Before continuing, there are a few main points to consider:
- This page applies to those who live in the US. Furthurmore, the CD Japan price is
based upon using a credit card. If you use a postal money order, the bill will be
less, but you might pay just as much when buying the money order.
- If you don't care about having only Japanese releases, of course YesAsia will be
cheaper. In addition to the Japanese releases, they sell 'overseas releases' which
are released in other parts of Asia by branches of the Japanese record labels.
Because their prices are set for outside countries, it is illegal to sell these
versions in Japan. Therefore, CD Japan does not carry any of them.
- Similarly, if you like to buy music from countries other than Japan, YesAsia is a good
choice because they also sell Chinese and Korean music.
- Occasionally, YesAsia gives out coupons and has sales. CD Japan does as well, but
nowhere near as frequently. Also, some people save some money by ordering through
affiliated YesAsia sites, but because that is against YesAsia regulations, I will
not expand on that.
- YesAsia has three options for shipping: USPS, UPS Ground, and UPS Air. CD Japan has
two shipping options: EMS and Air Mail. I personally use EMS, so I will use YesAsia's
UPS Air rates as comparison because it offers the same level of service. USPS is
obviously the cheapest, but it takes the longest and is the least secure. CD Japan's
Air Mail takes a little bit longer than EMS and does not offer tracking, so it is
cheaper as well. If you're interested in the other shipping options, please check
the stores' sites.
- Effective 11/21/2002, CD Japan will no longer charge tax on export orders.
- CD Japan's dollar prices are all estimates calculated at the time the order was
shipped. This is because their prices are in yen, so the dollar rate fluctuates.
I will try to provide current yen/dollar rates on a weekly basis.
- I have heard that there are other Japanese sites that are just as good or are even
better than CD Japan such as Amazon.jp. I haven't ordered from them yet, but if I
ever do, I'll add them to the comparisons.
